Rocky Mountain Writer

MIA

Sorry I’ve been missing in action.  Had a little accident at home on April 26th.  I fell down a flight of stairs and broke my back–quite literally.  ::sigh::  Posts will be few and far between until I’m a bit more mended, as I can’t sit up for long periods of time just yet.  Send healing thoughts my way when you can.  Thanks!

Be well!

Spring Showers

March 3, 2008 · 1 Comment

Ah…springtime in the Rockies!  Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?  Well, the two snowiest months of the year at 7,436′ above sea level are March and April!  We hadn’t seen bare ground up here on this mountain since October.  On Saturday temperatures reached almost 70.  It was glorious!  Then one of our infamous “spring showers” commenced early Sunday morning, and by bedtime we had almost a foot of fresh white snow with deeper drifts.

Yes, that’s springtime in the Rockies….

Typing as fast as I can….

So many of you are waiting for The Gift, including me. :) This is the book I sold while my late husband was dying, and it has taken months–okay, years now–for me to get back to writing in a meaningful way. Being creative while in mourning is an entirely new ballgame. Friends–other authors who’ve lost their heroes–warned me my process would change. Wow, where they right!

This past fall, I finally started making real progress again, and saw the light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. Then Fate intervened again when I suffered multiple pelvic fractures. Ouch! It’s taking months to recover, but I’m once again plodding along on this project. If nothing else, I am one stubborn writer, and I’m also blessed with the world’s most patient editor and agent, and wonderfully loyal readers. ::smooch::

There’s a reason my late husband often said we should have had Cat Stevens’ “Hard-Headed Woman” played at our wedding…. :)

Raising Teenagers

January 13, 2008 · 7 Comments

Ugh…

My late husband, Dave, and our youngest child and only son, Ben, were very close.  Ben was only 15 1/2 when his dad died from cancer in May 2005.  He’s now 18 and making his mom nuts. :)  Seriously, he’s gorgeous and talented–has soccer scouts emailing and calling from colleges.  He also has a good heart, which goes a long way in making up for the usual high school senior shortcomings.  :D

Did I mention his dad taught him to cook?  The kids always thought their dad was a better cook than mom, which was a Good Thing while I was on deadline, which was more often than not the last ten years of Dave’s life.  He was extremely supportive of my career.  I couldn’t have asked for a more loving and supportive husband or family.  ::sigh::

Anyway, Ben has continued the tradition, and cooks a lot of our meals–by choice!  And if he falls asleep with his TV on and I come upstairs to turn it off in the middle of the night, what channel do I find left on?  Nothing erotic.  Not MTV.  Nope.

The FOOD CHANNEL.  Yup…

I keep suggesting culinary school.  Take a look.  Don’t you think he’d be a hit with his own show on the FOOD CHANNEL?  :-)

Of course, I know I’m a wee bit biased, but I’m allowed.

Snow and More Snow…

January 8, 2008 · 4 Comments

Thanks for all your comments about Marty. :) I think he’s a keeper.

You’ll be happy to know, Mo, that I am hard at work still on The Gift. My recent fractures put me behind again, but I am one stubborn woman and writer. It will get finished! :)

Living at 7500 feet above sea-level is great in the summer, but gets old in the winter. Snow, snow, snow….

This is another photo by the brilliant Marty, of course. :-)

Have a great day!

My Love Life

January 7, 2008 · 8 Comments

Well, whouldathunkit? So many of you would find my blog the very first day, and wish me well on my gentleman/boy–heh–friend. :-) We’ve actually been seeing each other for a very long time now. He gave me a gorgeous amethyst heart shaped pendant set in white gold and surrounded by diamonds for Christmas. Ahem. Said it’s to remind me I have his heart. I thought, perhaps, it was my purple heart since I’m so doggone accident prone! :-)

At any rate, since so many of you have found this old widow out, I guess I should post a photo of my guy. So here he is. :-)

Meet Marty, world–ready or not.

Marty Yaslowitz, AKA Deb’s “Scarecrow” ;-)

Love,

Deb

Hello world!

Welcome to my blog. I’m new at this, so bear with me. The header photo was taken by my–um–gentleman friend (let’s face it, “boyfriend” is just too juvenile once we pass a certain age!), Marty. He’s a very talented photographer .

Meet Maggie Mae

January 6, 2008 · 3 Comments

This is a “Christmas Story” from last year, and a way to introduce you to a member of my family–my standard poodle. She’s quite the show-stealer.

I can tell you all about this, because I no longer have the very special item I’d ordered for Sunday’s gift exchange for my RWA chapter’s annual holiday party. He was perfect. I really shopped for this, because I wanted something they would really appreciMaggie Maeate–men and chocolate. :) Perfect, I tell you! The best gift I’ve ever found for a PPRW gift exchange.

My very tall standard poodle ate him…. ATE HIM! Okay, so she’s female. Perhaps we can forgive her. Well…maybe. I’ll take that under consideration. Right now, she’s in the doghouse….

If chocolate is toxic to dogs, we’ll soon find out! (Later note: she didn’t even have the decency to get a stomach ache, and the vet had the nerve to ask me where I’d purchased the chocolate loverboy so she could get one for herself!)

Let me tell you about the Chocolate Loverboy. He was certainly decadent. :) On the back of the box, it said “He’s Hard, But He Will Melt In Your Mouth!” Then it listed ten reasons why he’s better than your last boyfriend.

1. Will listen patiently to everything you say.
2. His eyes are only for you.
3. Understands when you have a headache.
4. Made of the right stuff.
5. Wears his heart on his boxers.
6. He’s hard when you want him to be. (blush)
7. He will stand by you.
8. If he even thinks about straying, just eat his legs.
9. Won’t talk about sports.
10. He’s fun to have around, but even more fun to get rid of. :-)

Here’s a link to where I bought him.

When I returned from the grocery store–yes, even “glamorous” romance authors do these mundane chores–and found Loverboy’s shipping box and wrapping paper on my office floor. No sign of the box the loverboy was in–including the cellophane–or any traces of chocolate on the floor. Not even a sliver….

ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I put on my boots to slog through mud and snow at 7,500 feet above sea level to see how much–if any–the mutt left in the backyard. She drags things through her dog door thinking we won’t figure it out. Silly girl. She’s 18 months old. I guess that makes her a young teen-ager in dog years. Right? Heh…Can I ground her, take the car keys, and suspend her Internet access…? Yeah, right! Or hit her where it really counts and confiscate the cellphone?!?!?

So let us all mourn Chocolate Loverboy’s passing–probably quite literally through poodle digestive tract–together, and hope I don’t end up having to take this pedigreed young monster to the vet….

Before anyone asks, the photo on the box showed him wearing pink boxers with hearts on them, holding a rose in a strategic region. Guess! Only the poodle knows for sure if he was anatomically correct, and she ain’t tellin’….

Did someone say I could relax now that my oldest daughter’s wedding is history as of December 2nd <http://www.debstover.com/wedding.html>?

And–trust me–I wish much of my life, including the above, was fiction….Hope your holidays went well, and that there’s a real chocolate loverboy in your life. :)
